trust produces a more rewarding work environment. Whenever people feel like
they can reach out to one another for help and support, individuals begin to
operate as teams. Schools that encourage these qualities of collaboration also
see growth in school culture, student outcomes, and job satisfaction. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

to make this a safe school that meets the needs of our students, regardless of
what those needs may be. New initiatives
that have been introduced and achieved through this collaboration include:
Muskoka Woods, Outdoor Education – Tree Top Adventure, the Meteor Mini-Track Day,
Youth Fusion Experiential Learning Project - installation of GagaBall Pitt,, enlargement of the Learning Commons, expansion of our
parking lot, and primary yard improvements.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 200%;">Now that the warm
weather has now caught up with us and we begin transitioning into the last
month of school, we can get up with the phrase" must be winding down" for
the school year. I am always quick to respond, "No! Winding Up." </span><u><span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;"><o:p></o:p></span></u></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 200%;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;">I often marvel at how fast a school year goes
by, and in many ways it seems like just yesterday that we were welcoming the
kids off the buses on the first day of school. I’ve written before about how
much I love this time of year, mostly because of the opportunity that we all
have to reflect on ourselves as educators, on the learning that happened with
our students, and on the personal and professional goals that we all set almost
ten months ago. We also get to celebrate the work, the accomplishments, and the
successful initiatives that have taken hold for the betterment of our school
and students, and we can think critically about how we can make some purposeful
changes that will help us do better in certain areas for next year. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;">When I look back over the past
year much of it seems like a blur, and I’m left feeling a little dizzy and
overwhelmed, and a lot grateful and proud. We took on so much this year as a
faculty and we deserve to take a few moments to revel in the positive changes
that are transforming our community. That being said, the last few weeks of a
school year can be tough…arguably the toughest of them all because of the
fatigue that has begun to set in…because of the onslaught of emotions that
comes along with saying goodbye to students and colleagues and friends, and
because of all the culminating events that get packed into the last several
days.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;">I’d like to reiterate a
challenge that I put out to my faculty at a previous school a couple of years
ago, by asking you all to re-commit to our students, their learning, and to
each other over the next three to four weeks, and to dig deep to finish what we
started. You see, sometimes when schools and educators aren’t careful, there
can be a tendency to take the foot off the gas so to speak when speeding toward
the end of the year. It can become very easy to let complacency creep in, and
to ease off on the work, the effort, and the attention to student learning. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Losing focus and looking ahead
to next year can quickly turn what has been a wonderful year into a
disappointing result simply because the finish wasn’t strong and the goals
weren’t seen through to completion. In my opinion we’ve put ourselves in a
great position to end the year on a high, and to be able to look back on the
year with an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment. It’s an exciting
time of the year I know, and the kids are happy and smiling…we all have one eye
focused on our summer adventures, and we can see the finish line on the
horizon…I’m asking you however to not lose sight of the importance of what’s
still left to do.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Finally, I’m asking you all to
pay careful attention to our beautiful kids over the next few weeks. Many of
them are navigating the rough emotional road that leads to saying goodbye to
their friends, saying goodbye to a school that they love, and saying goodbye to
the identities that they’ve forged during their time with us here at SMS. It’s
also very easy for all our kids to get caught up in the promise of summertime
fun, and to get distracted from the goal at hand, which is to work hard right
up until the end, and to set themselves up to move on with confidence, pride,
and with the right mindset. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;">Talk to your kids…ask them how
they are feeling…give them extra support if you see them veering off track, and
be the amazing role models and mentors that they’ve come to expect. Don’t let
them off the hook, and go above and beyond (even though you’re tired) to make
the final three or four weeks their best of the year. Starting the year strong
is so, so important as you all know, but it’s comparatively easy compared to
the challenges of June. Finishing the year strong is where the rubber hits the
road in my opinion, and it’s here that master teachers and school wide leaders
worth their salt show their mettle.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="line-height: 200%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 200%;">For those of you moving on to
new adventures, remember that you’re only ever as good as your last exit…….and
for those of us returning, know that students remember the educators that we
are in June…..so let’s make sure they remember the best of what we have to offer.
The last few weeks are going to speed by everyone so please commit to making
them count. Let’s all feel great about what we’ve accomplished so far this
year…it’s been amazing…but we’re not done yet! Finish strong and wrap up the
year with a beautiful bow…Have a wonderful month everyone and remember to be
great for our students and good to each other.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

This is my 10th year serving as an
elementary principal, and I learn something new every single day. Sometimes I
learn through my own mistakes, and other times I learn by listening, observing,
or connecting with others.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
At Thanksgiving Day weekend
(October 6-15), my wife and I took some time off work and traveled to Sweden
and Iceland to be with our daughters. My oldest daughter, Alisha, is attending
Jonkoping University in Sweden through U of Windsor studying nursing for a
semester while my youngest, Candice, is at Brock University in St. Catharines
studying Concurrent Education. This was my first time to Europe at 53 years old
on the day we were leaving.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
Using technology is very important
part of organizing my life and is part of my lifestyle. Even with our busy schedules, the planning and
booking of our trip to Sweden and Iceland was easily done as we are able to
communicate with other through various forms of media. All of the places we
visited and functions we attended we were able to pre-book and/or co-ordinate
last minute with various apps.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
With Google Maps outlining
transportation routes and pick up and drop off times--no asks for directions
anymore. Even with the language barrier, I found myself using Google Translator
to understand what I was looking for. Currency converters are fantastic when
determining how much you want to spend. Most of the people I observed had some
a phone for taking pictures and video. While having something to eat we would
Airdrop our pictures to each other and share them with our family and friends
on social media. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
Keeping a charge on your phone is a
task and/skill as you are always looking for an outlet. Having a convertor is essential
outside of North America and also to carry a portable one is definitely a good
idea as nothing is worse than having your device run out of power. In addition,
a luxury that was taken for granted is having access to the Internet 24 for 7.
Even though I purchased a travel plan, I found myself looking for connectivity
when in remote areas. Not sure why I was so driven to share on social media
what I was experiencing, but turning on roaming was a costly mistake.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
Most of my communication is done when
I get up in the morning. I still found myself connected to staff and was able
to get a good sense of their immediate needs and keep a pulse on the building.
On the hand, my communication back to them and loss sense of 6 hours difference
in time may have interrupted their sleep and had those questioning my sense of
relaxation?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
Technology is a wonderful tool that
can connect us in so many important ways. We just have to be careful that we do
not allow it to disconnect us from those who matter most. As an educator, I’ve
found that the most transformative aspect of technology is its ability to bring
people and ideas together. It can have the opposite effect if we’re not
careful.<o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 150%;">Setting direction of your
school is what most of us due at the beginning of the new school. Reviewing
EQAO scores, report marks, familiarizing staff with your SIP (School Improvement
Plan) can be an undertaking. With the learning foundations that are involved
take time to meet those learning conditions that are met. How we get there through
a<span style="background: white; color: #222222;"> series of actions or steps taken
in order to achieve a particular end is the Process. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 150%;"><span style="background: white; color: #222222;"><br /></span></span></div>

<span style="background: white; color: #222222; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 150%;">As
educators we need to concentrate on the middle where the learning takes place.
When we focus on the learner oriented vs. performance oriented we will see
outcomes later with greater success. Not only do students learn, but as
educators we learn with them and leaving the impact on the work with others.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span lang="EN-CA">I have enjoyed my 6 years here as principal at St. Philip Catholic
School. This is a great school community with so many caring people who serve
the needs of their children. Through all their involvement in their masses, academics,
sports, field trips, and music performances the students here have always
demonstrated an excellent attitude, work ethic and values that are Catholic
Christian based.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-CA">I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the
entire staff for their superb work and their dedication to all the students. They are a very hard working group who
generously give up their time and energy to make sure that your children have
the best education possible and have a wonderful school experience. Believe me; your children are truly blessed.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-CA">I also want to thank our Parent Advisory Council for all their care,
effort, time and energy that they have graciously given. The school is in great
hands with a new young executive! I am sure you will continue to come together
regularly to meet the interests and needs of all the children.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

creating a learning culture of trust produces a more rewarding work
environment. Whenever people feel like they can reach out to one another for
help and support, individuals begin to operate as teams. Schools that encourage
these qualities of collaboration also see growth in school culture, student
outcomes, and job satisfaction. Success begins when we first create an
environment where people know why they come to work, how their roles are defined,
and what they can do to develop their strengths. St. Philip Catholic School is
that learning culture of trust.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Recently we had our <a href="https://youtu.be/jLX7IhY6oUw">SPP Track Day</a> and it was great see all the support from the teachers, students, and parents who attended. A special recognition goes to @GVDB78 for organizing this day!<br />

more rewarding work environment. Whenever people feel like they can reach out
to one another for help and support, individuals begin to operate as teams. </span><span style="color: #444444; font-family: "Helvetica",sans-serif; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 150%; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-CA;">Schools that encourage these qualities of collaboration also see growth
in school culture, student outcomes, and job satisfaction. Success begins when
we first create an environment where people know why they come to work, how
their roles are defined, and what they can do to develop their strengths. Before
school starts I make every effort to touch base with staff on a personal level.
Showing that you care about what staff do after school hours makes them realize
that there are other priorities in their lives. Quick chats can be as simple
from going to the gym or what they watched on TV last night. Sometimes these
subtle conversations lead to school and you learn about how they are doing in their
classroom. You can determine if they are moving forward or if they are working through
difficult issues. You must seek the input of others along the way and reflect
on how are you frequently teaming, collaborating, and talking with others.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

innovation. As administrators we need to provide pathways of thinking to ensure

available resources and the needs of the students who use it. Converting the
physical space of the library will empower students in using a wide variety of
hands-on activities. This will develop a mindset that values voice,
choice, playfulness, experimentation, collaboration and community. Diversity of
activities is crucial to the design, making, and explor<span style="text-align: center;">ation process. By
offering a broad range of equipment and materials such as Arts, Chess, Drama,
Lego, Robotics, Textiles, and 3D Printing we would be meeting our students interests.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: x-small;">Having space that is functional is key in a school setting and is important
for a range of ages. The new space is accessed by all 200 students from
Grades K-8. In the beginning stages, the converted space will be used for
extra-curricular to explore student common interest such as Art, Drama, Chess,
and Robotics Clubs. Once we become comfortable in this setting, students will
use the space during the school day in a scheduled class time with their
teacher from year to year. Other opportunities may arise to maximize utility of
the space after school or evenings and weekends. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="color: #444444;">According to Marc-André Lalande, “a Personal Learning Network is a way of describing the group of people that you connect with to learn their ideas, their questions, their reflections, and their references. Your PLN is not limited to online interactions, but it is that online, global interactive part that really makes it special. It is personal because you choose who’s part of that group; you choose if you want to lurk–just check out what people are saying–or if you share; because you choose when to do so, and how to do so.”</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
<span style="color: #444444;">On Tuesday January 17 I was part of two 1 hour sessions that involved my PLN. First was a Local focused group discussing Wellness/Mental Health through #opcchat and the second was a Webinar <a href="https://www.bigmarker.com/GlobalMathDept/Integrating-Computational-Thinking-into-the-Elementary-Classroom" target="_blank">Integrating Computational Thinking into the Math Classroom by Lisa Floyd</a>. Educators were able to interact, engage, reflect, share, and make personal connections. I was able to enhance my professional learning from the comforts of my home and expand on my digital portfolio. What I garnered from these sessions that evening I was able to share with my staff the next day and enabling them to move forward with their own. My choice, my time, my place!</span></div>

Social Media has changed me as an
educator. My ideas and practices are validated on regular basis making me more
confident as educator in my school community. I am always struck by the number
of people who willing to share their ideas when researching to validate my
thinking to find better ways to run the school. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%;">
When I need help, I always got to
Social Media for my answers. The large variety of contacts are always willing
share their knowledge and expertise and don’t feel hampered by the requests(s).
The support is out there you just have to look and ask for it. These resources
are widely available, they are current, and the <span style="text-align: center;">exchange of ideas help me grow as a reflective
learner.</span></div>

Communicating through social media in
our school community has increased the engagement piece. Having teacher’s share
their students learning took some time setting up with consent forms. However,
the benefits of this change has made our school learning transparent, reflective in sharing the successes and challenges.<o:p></o:p></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-indent: 36.0pt;">
Coding is an
instructional tool that some teachers use to help children learn logic-based
reasoning and other problem-solving skills. It was great see all the classrooms
participating in "Hour of Code" as students were engaged with plenty
of new learning going on. Classrooms
made reference to various education sites as they prepared for this day:<span style="color: blue;"> <a href="https://code.org/">https://code.org/</a></span>
<a href="https://www.tynker.com/hour-of-code/"><span style="color: blue;">https://www.tynker.com/hour-of-code/</span></a>
and used the #HourOfCode hashtag on social media. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-indent: 36.0pt;">
I spent some
time in the <span style="color: blue;"><a href="https://twitter.com/markrenaud2/status/808098716334903296">Year
1 Year2 classroom</a> </span>where students were making 90 degree turns with square
patterns. Their decisions were methodical and reflective and they were learning
and having fun. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-indent: 36.0pt;">
Feedback from
some of the parents were positive and as their children shared their learning
during that day. Inquiries were: How many times does this occur a year? Is this
part of the curriculum? It was hard to answer
our parents even though evidence suggests <span lang="EN"><a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/back-to-school-canada-lagging-in-push-to-teach-kids-computer-coding-1.3185926"><span style="color: blue;">Back
to school: Canada lagging in push to teach kids computer codin</span>g</a> </span>as
there are no plans to make computer coding lessons mandatory in Ontario schools.
The current curriculum is lagging with the 21C demands as in 2007 the <a href="http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/scientec18currb.pdf"><span style="color: blue;">Science
and Technology</span></a> curriculum and in
2005 the <a href="http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/scientec18currb.pdf"><span style="color: blue;">Mathematics</span></a>
curriculum were revised. Moreover, any
